How Do I Research a Topic?

- Come to the Library!

- Take out a book- read the chapter titles and check if it has an index. An index is an alphabetical list of topics mentioned in the book. It can bring you straight to the pages you need.

- Use Google Scholar (a version of Google that will help you find academic information and sources)

- When searching online, use inverted commas. If you use exact spelling in inverted commas e.g. "The Easter Rising", it will only bring you results with that exact phrase. It narrows down your search but be careful of your spelling and word order!

How Do I Reference or Cite the Material I've Used?

Referencing is vital in order to illustrate that you've researched a topic using appropriate sources and that you've given credit to the authors of those works. I've put together a guide, which has methods for referencing a lot of different types of sources but you'll generally only need a couple per project. The guide is available by CLICKING HERE.

How Do I Spot Fake News?

In order to spot misinformation or disinformation, you need to be news literate. News literacy is the ability to determine the credibility of news and other information and to know what to trust, share and act on. The News Literacy Project is an organisation dedicated to empowering people to stop spreading misinformation. They've put together 5 helpful tips for spotting fake news - You can read this by CLICKING HERE.
